Mexican Mosiacs

We had the five amigos in the garden on Wednesday, mosiac-ing… Diane showed us how to finish off things with grouting and cleaning up the tiles and – well it was very hands on -we all had black hands and faces by the end, but wonderful to see the finished product. Thanks to Diane for patiently guiding us through the process and to all who helped create it – Sally, Mary, Julie B, Suzie, Carol, Gen (I’ve probably missed someone). We have all learnt new skills and been inspired to create. So along with the mosiacs, we’ll have a thankyou and celebration for them, the seating from Neil Tait and the Mens’ Shed and our benefactors for the projects – Newstead Swimming Pool, Bunnings, RAV, Newstead Rural Transaction Centre, etc. in December as part of our end of year celebrations and thankyous. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, the Castlemaine Garden Festival awaits! Please come and visit during 3 – 11 November. We’ll be on show with members to welcome and chat on both weekends and the Monday and Tuesday of Melbourne Cup week. There’ll be cake and other sweet treats as well as ‘garden mix’ (think trail mix without the hiking part), hot and cold drinks and plants and seeds for sale. Or just come and have a wander about. Entry is $4 and $3 will go towards our garden projects, to include and encourage more community members to connect through food gardening.

Also over the Festival, The Hub in Castlemaine will be holding a Wicking Bed Workshop. Well worth a visit to see what they are doing in a small space…..

Workshop: The Principles & Practice of making a wicking garden bed

When: Saturday 10th of November

Time: at 10am cuppa and cake for a 10.30 start

At: The Hub Plot, entry from Templeton St, Castlemaine.

Cost: $20

If you’d like to know more about these low-water garden beds here’s a great opportunity to learn.  The wicking system is a great technique to use when water is scarce, it helps keep water in the root zone, right where it is needed.
We’ll be making one from a fruit box on the day, but we also have some interesting half constructed and fully constructed beds so you can see them in action. Contact for booking or further information:  Heather 0409 327791
