Gardening in the shortest month

greek basilFebruary is upon us and time to plant autumn and winter veges. Last thing you are thinking about on these long summer evening – cabbage and cauliflower seem a distant prospect, but you’ll be hungry for them soon enough. Cauliflower is a “flower” plant, along with broccoli, so the best time to plant this month is from the 10th to 13th, or 20th to 22nd (or today – but tommorow is a node day, best avoided) For more info and planting dates, go to the February Planting Notes. The Crop Care posts also have info on growing specific types of vegetables and crops.

At the produce exchange yesterday it was evident that this year has been one for basil – we had many types – sweet, thai, perennial or greek, purple, all giving off a lovely waft of, well, basil. Plums and rhubarb and other herbs also made the exchange. Enjoy February in the patch.
